The most well known legend of white heather is that in the 3rd century A.D., a young maiden named Malvina, daughter of the poet Ossian was to be married to her true love Oscar. Oscar, a warrior, never came home. Killed in battle, a messenger was sent to to deliver the horrible news. The messenger delivered the horrible news with a spray of burgundy heather. Malvina was inconsolable upon hearing the news of her true love’s death. Wondering among moors and mossy hills, she shed futile tears. Legend says that as her tears fell upon the heather it turned the purple flowers into white ones. Instead of drowning in bitterness, Malvina decided right then and there that anyone who came across a white heather would be blessed with good fortune for all of their days.

Horse brasses were used to adorn the harness horses, primarily in the UK, Some older brasses were worn on harness, others were just made primarily to commemorate a certain event. It is hard to date many of the harness brasses, yet you can get an idea from the patina as well as how well the brass is cast. You can sometimes tell from the darkness on the reverse. Stamped brasses are from the early 1900's and only up to the 1930's.

Folk-lore and myths suggest the brasses were used as amulets to ward off the “evil eye” and so they are sometime regarded as a good luck charm.

7 freshly harvested seeds of the Monkey Puzzle Tree (Araucaria Araucana), which are taken from ripe seed pods which have fallen naturally from a mature, healthy tree which is decades old. The seeds are viable, and can be germinated easily by soaking in warm water for 24 hours and then planting in moist garden compost with the pointed end downwards. If germinating multiple specimens, they should be spaced 2 inches apart, and the top of the seed should be left exposed to the air, uncovered by the growing medium. These are a fascinating, unique tree to grow and will provide a wonderful focal point for your garden for decades to come!
